IF Yairo Muñoz and IF Max Schrock sent to Cardinals

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland acquired outfielder Stephen Piscotty from the St. Louis Cardinals for infielder Yairo Muñoz and minor league infielder Max Schrock, the club announced today.

Piscotty batted .235 with nine home runs and 39 RBI in 107 games with St. Louis last year.  He added 52 walks for a .342 on-base percentage in a season interrupted by two stints on the disabled list with a strained hamstring and strained groin.  The 26-year-old right-handed hitter appeared exclusively in right field on defense in 2017.  Piscotty has 260 career games in right field, 55 in left field, 12 at first base and 11 in center field.

Piscotty signed a six-year contract through the 2022 season with a club option for 2023 on March 31, 2017.  He batted .273 with 22 home runs and 85 RBI in 153 games in his first full season in 2016 and is a .268 career hitter with 38 home runs and 163 RBI in 323 games.  Piscotty was a supplemental first round choice by St. Louis in the 2012 First Year Player Draft out of Stanford and was the Cardinals Minor League Player of the Year in 2015.  He graduated from Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton in 2009.

Muñoz began the year at Double-A Midland for the second consecutive season but made his Triple-A debut with Nashville in late June.  He combined with both clubs to hit .300 with 13 home runs and 68 RBI in 112 games.  The 22-year-old right-handed hitter appeared in 46 games at shortstop, 36 at third base, 20 in center field, five in right field, three in left field and two at second base.  Munoz was signed by the A’s as a non-drafted free agent Jan. 27, 2012 and is a .267 hittter with 41 home runs and 228 RBI in 473 games over six seasons in the minors.

Schrock spent the entire 2017 season at Double-A Midland and was named to the Texas League Midseason and Postseason All-Star teams after batting .321 with seven home runs and 46 RBI in 106 games.  He ranked third in the TL in on-base percentage (.379), fourth in batting and sixth in hits (134).  The 23-year-old left-handed hitter appeared exclusively at second base on defense.  Schrock was drafted by Washington in 2015 and was dealt to the A’s in August of 2016 for Marc Rzepczynski.
